The Diverse project was an initiative funded by Derbyshire County Council and The Broadway Media Centre, Nottingham and ran by Greenshoots. The project started with a series of workshops where young people from a wide and Diverse range of cultural backgrounds took part in sessions exploring their use of language. These sessions then informed performance pieces in Rap, Song and Dance, Animation and Fashion written and performed by the young people themselves mentored by industry professionals and teachers and assisted by undergraduates and volunteers. The work enabled the young people to explore their own and others' cultural heritage through the Arts and was a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding experience for all involved. Two evening performances took place at the end of the project and attracted an audience of 500 parents, family, friends, governors, teachers and council and Broadway dignitaries.

MEETING NEW FRIENDS

The project brought together students from 15 schools across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. The summer free holiday workshops provided young people of all ages with the opportunity to make new friends from a wide range of cultural backgrounds. Many are still friends today after such a fun time.

CONFIDENCE AND TEAMWORK

The young people involved had the opportunity to showcase their talents to a receptive audience and were able to develop confidence as performers and more importantly work as part of a team.

EXPERIENCE OF THE CULTURAL SECTOR

Many of the practitioners were chosen because they have experience of working within industry. Although the project was fun the steering group thought it was important to provide opportunities for young people to gain experience within the cultural sector.
